Mission Staff Members on a Team Building Event

The Kenya High Commission staff members and their families congregated at Klun Kloof park in Pretoria to have a team building exercise. Among the many interactive fun activities, those present were randomly grouped in two sets. Each team was then handed a raw egg which was diligently carried on a tea spoon for 4.5km. The goal was to ensure that the egg was delivered to the finish point. To add more fun, the oldest member of each team was to walk backwards for the last 100m. During this exercise, each team was awarded points for the different species of plants, birds and animals sighted en route. Photographic evidence (see weaver bird above) was accepted as proof-of-sighting. The teams were later treated to a healthy breakfast and refreshments. This is one of the activities geared towards ensuring that staff members work as a team at all times to ensure better service delivery at the Mission.

THE pleas of a young schoolboy were not enough to save his 13-year-old friend, Keneddy Githinji, from a knife-wielding Port Elizabeth teenager who stabbed him four times before taking his cell phone.

The 17-year-old who allegedly indecently assaulted and stabbed Githinji on Friday, will appear in court today .
Githinji was walking to school with five friends when the attacker struck.
“He threatened the first group with a knife and indecently assaulted one of the boys,” police spokesman Captain Sandra van Rensburg said.
The two boys managed to escape and the teenager then attacked the group Githinji was in.
“He pulled the boy [Githinji] aside and sexually assaulted him,” said Van Rensburg. “He then stabbed him with a knife and took his cell phone.”
Githinji’s mother, Jane, said yesterday the attacker caught her son because he was “not as fast as the other kids”.
“One of the boys pleaded with the man to take the phone and leave his friend alone ,” she said.
A passer-by who heard the boys’ screams chased after the attacker and apprehended him. But Githinji had died on the scene.
“Some of the children started dragging Ken eddy ’s body towards the road to get help,” his mother said.
“The government should separate criminals from ordinary citizens … to protect our children ,” Githinji’s father, John, said.
Stabbings involving school children have made headlines recently. Last month’s samurai sword killing at Krugersdorp’s Nic Diederichs Technical High School is still fresh in the minds of educators and parents.
A 17-year-old was arrested after stabbing a fellow pupil at Heidelberg’s Hoër Volkskool in August.
Eastern Cape Education MEC Mahlubandile Qwase called the attacks an “act of utter and despicable cowardice”.
Qwase said his department had sent trauma counsellors to assist Githinji’s family and his friends.
Van Rensburg said the 17-year-old will appear in court today on charges of murder, robbery and two counts of indecent assault.
